India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 opens a landmark year for chipmaking

India's semiconductor sector is entering what MeitY Secretary S Krishnan calls a "landmark year", with the formal rollout of India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 backed by an outlay of Rs 1,27,500 crore.

Speaking at a CII conference on advancing atmanirbharta in semiconductor design and manufacturing, Krishnan noted that three units — Micron's facility, the Tata plant at Sanand and CG Power — have already moved into commercial production. Two more units are expected to go on stream before the end of the year, with twelve additional approved projects in the pipeline.

The bigger picture

ISM 2.0 pairs manufacturing incentives with design-linked support, aiming to build depth in packaging, compound semiconductors and chip design talent. For Indian electronics manufacturers, a domestic supply base shortens lead times and creates a base of high-skill engineering jobs across Gujarat, Assam, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.
